Police Update on Human Remains Found in Nottinghamshire

Police have issued a statement following the discovery of human skeletal remains in a wooded area adjacent to the A617 Rainworth Bypass near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Members of the public alerted authorities at approximately 2:45 PM on Saturday, May 23.

Investigation Underway

Nottinghamshire Police believe the remains belong to a single individual. Specialist archaeologists have been deployed to the scene to gather evidence, with work continuing on Tuesday, May 26. A cordon remains in place, and officers are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry to formally identify the deceased.

Police Statement

Detective Inspector Stuart Barson stated: "This discovery is being treated with the utmost seriousness, and a thorough investigation is ongoing. Officers have been working around the clock since Saturday to establish the circumstances surrounding these remains."

He added: "I can confirm there is no wider risk to the public. While the identity has yet to be formally established, a dedicated team is working to confirm this as soon as possible. However, this process may take some time, and the scene will remain in place for several days."

DI Barson thanked the public for their patience and urged against speculation. "We hope to provide further information as the inquiry progresses. In the meantime, please refrain from speculating," he said.
