A second teenager has been charged with attempted murder following a homophobic hate crime attack on a man in Smethwick. The victim, aged in his 50s, was assaulted on St Paul's Road at around 8.30pm on Sunday, June 14.
Arrest and Charges
A 17-year-old boy was arrested in the Dudley area on Friday, June 19, and remanded in custody. He appeared at Wolverhampton Magistrates' Court on Saturday, June 20. Another 17-year-old, previously charged with attempted murder, has been remanded into youth detention pending a hearing at Birmingham Crown Court next month.
Hate Crime Investigation
West Midlands Police confirmed the incident is being treated as a hate crime due to a homophobic comment allegedly made during the attack. Chief Supt Kim Madill of Sandwell Police stated: "I know the real concern and anger this attack has caused in the area, and I’ve been in touch with representatives from the community throughout the week to reassure them we are doing everything we can."
The victim remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition. Police have found no evidence that the attack was motivated by race or religion.
