Teen critical after Birmingham street shooting

A 16-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being shot in a street in Alum Rock, Birmingham, on the evening of Wednesday, July 1. Emergency services were called to Bowyer Road, near St Saviour’s Road, shortly before 5.30pm to reports of a shooting.

Police investigation underway

West Midlands Police confirmed the teenager suffered gunshot wounds that are potentially life-threatening. Officers sealed off Bowyer Road, which runs from Alum Rock Road to St Saviour’s Road, and a large police presence remained in the area. The investigation is in its early stages, with forensic teams, CCTV checks, and door-to-door enquiries underway.

Although the incident occurred near the Zia-Ul-Quran Mosque, police stated they do not believe the shooting is connected to the place of worship. A spokesperson said: 'We understand this is extremely worrying for people in the area, and local officers will be remaining there to speak to anyone with concerns.'

Community reaction

Alum Rock councillors Nosheen Khalid and Shaukat Mahmood, both of Better Birmingham, issued a joint statement expressing their sadness. 'Like so many residents this evening, we are deeply saddened by the serious incident that has taken place in Alum Rock. Our thoughts and prayers are with the young person, their family and loved ones, and everyone affected by what has happened.'

They urged residents to avoid Bowyer Road due to the ongoing police incident and to follow diversions. 'At times like this, we would ask everyone to come together as a community with compassion and respect. Please avoid speculating about what has happened or sharing photos or videos from the scene. Unverified information can cause further distress to families and may hinder the police investigation.'
