A Birmingham teenager has been jailed for a knife attack involving a metre-long sword, during which he made a 'beheading motion' towards his rival. Adam Ali, 18, from Stechford, received a two-year detention and training order at Birmingham Crown Court for the incident on Belchers Lane, Bordesley Green, on May 17, 2024.
Details of the Attack
Ali, then 16, clashed with 17-year-old Ibrahim Ishfaq at around 3.15pm amid ongoing family disputes. Prosecutor Matilda Robinson-Murphy told the court: 'Mr Ishfaq describes Mr Ali coming towards him with his face partially covered, pulling a knife - which was a metre-long sword - from his waistband and swinging in a beheading motion.' Both teenagers were armed and sustained injuries during the confrontation.
Ali's Admission and Sentence
Ali later confessed his 'desire to kill' Ishfaq to a youth offending worker and was recorded telling a friend he wanted to 'neck shot' the victim. He pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and possessing a knife in public. Defending barrister Joanna Staples said Ali's actions were partly due to 'bravado and a lack of maturity' and noted his rehabilitation in custody, where he became a mentor and listener.
District Judge Adrian Lower acknowledged Ali's poor mental health at the time but emphasised the seriousness of knife crime. He said: 'Knife crime is a serious evil in this country. Too many young men take knives onto the streets of Birmingham and elsewhere.'
Victim Also Sentenced
Ishfaq was also sentenced to a 12-month detention and training order after admitting unlawful wounding on the basis of excessive self-defence.
