A van driver has been hailed as a hero after assisting armed police in Kent by providing a lift during a dramatic foot chase, as revealed in newly released bodycam footage. The incident occurred in Thanet, Kent, where officers were pursuing a man wanted for a serious assault. The driver stopped as the chase unfolded and instructed one officer to “get in the back.”
How the chase unfolded
Police reported that the suspect fled on foot toward Tivoli Road after the initial call-out, according to the Mirror. The officer entered the rear of the black van, leaving the sliding door open while directing the driver during the pursuit. “Go, go, go! Cheers buddy. Follow that police officer,” the officer can be heard saying in the footage.
The driver sped after the fleeing suspect, following the officer’s directions before stopping ahead of the man. The armed officer then jumped from the van, drew his weapon, and arrested the suspect.
Driver's reaction and police gratitude
The driver, who has not been identified, observed the arrest before receiving a handshake from officers in gratitude for his help. He later said: “I am just glad I could be of service. That was quite exhilarating.” Armed Policing Superintendent Will Lay stated: “A violent offender who was being relentlessly pursued, and was seeking to evade capture, came close to losing patrols in a nearby park. However, our armed officers remained committed. Thanks to the quick and selfless actions of this responsible and public-spirited driver, officers were able to apprehend the dangerous individual.”
Lay added: “The successful arrest may not have been possible without the member of the public and his vehicle. He should feel proud of his contribution to keeping his community safe, and we are truly grateful for his assistance.”
