Warwickshire Woman Faces Stalking Charges Involving Princess Diana's Brother

A woman from the Midlands has been formally charged with stalking Earl Spencer, the brother of the late Princess Diana, and has been issued with strict bail conditions to stay away from him. Marinela Atomei, aged 44, appeared at Warwick Crown Court on Monday, February 16, after spending a weekend in custody, where she was granted bail under stringent terms.

Court Imposes Strict Conditions to Protect Earl Spencer

Judge Anthony Potter ordered Atomei not to come within 100 metres of Earl Spencer, also known as Charles Spencer, or his partner, Professor Cat Jarman. Additionally, she is prohibited from entering Northamptonshire, where the Spencer family home, Althorp House, is located. Atomei, who resides at Penny Happeny Court in Atherstone, Warwickshire, apologised to the judge during the proceedings, stating, "I do apologise" as the conditions were outlined.

The prosecution, led by Sabhia Pathan, detailed that Atomei, a Romanian national who has lived in the UK for over a decade, visited the Althorp Estate multiple times since July of last year. She also sent letters to Earl Spencer via recorded delivery, which expressed her love, and made numerous posts on social media platforms. Judge Potter described these actions as showing an "infatuation" with Earl Spencer, remarking that the letters were likely "profoundly unnerving" for him.

Defendant's Background and Legal Proceedings

Sophie Murray, defending Atomei, highlighted that her client has a completely clear criminal record and has demonstrated insight into her behaviour. Despite this, the judge emphasised the seriousness of the charges, which involve stalking causing serious harm or distress. Atomei is scheduled to reappear at Warwick Crown Court on March 13 for further proceedings related to the stalking charge.

In granting bail, Judge Potter issued a stern warning to Atomei, stating, "I'm going to grant you bail. I give you this warning – if you break any of your bail conditions, you will be brought back into custody until this case is dealt with." He added that she now understands how Earl Spencer feels about the contact and how unsettling it has been for him, expressing confidence that she comprehends the expected behaviour moving forward.

The case underscores the legal measures taken to protect individuals from unwanted attention and harassment, particularly in high-profile situations involving public figures like Earl Spencer. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as the legal process unfolds.
