Birmingham Priest Calls for Open Minds to Heal Community Division

Father Fretch Ballesteros, the priest in charge at Holy Family in Small Heath, has delivered a powerful message addressing the roots of division within communities. In an exclusive interview, the 36-year-old cleric outlined his belief that ignorance and indifference are the primary drivers of societal splits.

The Core Causes of Division

Father Fretch emphasized that ignorance and indifference create barriers between people. He stated, "The first thing really is ignorance and indifference. I think those are the reasons that can really cause division." He advocates for love as the essential cure, explaining that only through love can these issues be overcome.

The priest urged Brummies to cultivate open-mindedness and open hearts. He said, "I think if people could be open minded everywhere and had an open heart as well, I think there would be a greater expression of everything that we need, which is a result of a loving heart, a loving mind and a loving self."

Education as a Tool Against Ignorance

Father Fretch highlighted education as a critical weapon in the fight against ignorance. He remarked, "I think trying to fight ignorance through education is such an important aspect to it." This approach, combined with love, forms his strategy for fostering unity.

A Message of Love and Peace

Reiterating his focus on love, Father Fretch shared a pointed message about its broader meaning. He said, "I really hope more people will be open to the true message of love. Love is not just limited to two lovers sitting around the corner. Love is actually all about understanding and opening ourselves wide regardless of colour, religion or even backgrounds."

He elaborated that love involves caring and extending a helping hand to others, irrespective of their origins or status. Father Fretch believes that if society embraces this mindset, peace becomes achievable. He concluded, "Peace is always a reality we could experience and live."

This call to action comes as Birmingham continues to navigate challenges related to community cohesion, with Father Fretch's words offering a hopeful perspective on building a more harmonious city.
