Belper's Triple Heritage Celebration: 250 Years of Mills, 300 Years of Strutt
Belper's Triple Heritage Celebration in 2026

This year, the historic town of Belper and its iconic Strutt's North Mill are embarking on a remarkable triple celebration, commemorating three significant anniversaries that weave together the rich tapestry of the area's industrial and cultural heritage. The year 2026 holds special importance, marking a quarter of a millennium since Jedediah Strutt constructed the South Mill in 1776, his pioneering cotton-spinning mill in Belper. It also celebrates the 300th anniversary of Strutt's birth and 25 years since the Derwent Valley Mills were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.

A Community United in Celebration

Local communities across Belper have collaborated enthusiastically to organise an extensive programme of more than 100 diverse and engaging events, with the number continuing to grow as excitement builds. This collective effort underscores the town's pride in its heritage and its commitment to sharing it with residents and visitors alike.

Heritage Talks at No.28

As a key component of the Belper 250 festivities, Strutt's North Mill has curated a series of heritage talks that delve into various aspects of the town's past. These sessions will cover topics ranging from the Strutt family and their influential mills to the railways and Belper's lost manor house. Due to limited capacity, advance booking is essential to secure a place at these informative events.

Expanded Heritage Walks Programme

2026 introduces Strutt's most ambitious heritage walks programme to date, featuring over 30 guided walks led by knowledgeable volunteers. Whether participants prefer a leisurely short stroll around the picturesque River Gardens, a spooky ghost trail through the town, or an interactive encounter with a costumed character, there is something to suit every interest this spring. This will be followed by a bustling walking festival in June, offering even more opportunities to explore Belper's history.

Volunteers Brew Anniversary Ales

In a unique collaboration, the team has partnered with Crich Brew Co to produce four special anniversary ales. Volunteers had the memorable experience in January of helping to brew the first batch, a 'Pull Your Socks Up' Porter, using traditional ingredients and heritage malts. These beers will be released throughout the year, with the team extending thanks to head brewer Lloyd for his support in this creative project.

The 'Pull Your Socks Up' Porter will be available on cask from Friday, February 13, with bottled versions to follow shortly after.

National Mills Weekend and Tour Season

Strutt's will join in the national celebrations on Sunday, May 10, for National Mills Weekend, featuring clog dancing, nail-making demonstrations, family-friendly activities, and more. Additionally, the popular five-star 'Strutt Around the Mills' tours commence on March 21, running at 11am and 1.30pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays until the end of October, offering in-depth insights into the mill's history.
