Livestock Hub
The cattle market at Waters Green in Macclesfield during the early 1900s features the railway station visible in the background. This bustling hub was central to the town's agricultural trade.
Bustling Centre
An unknown date photo of Macclesfield Market Place shows a street scene with people and an early car driving along the road. Buildings to the right and left include ‘Salter and Salter’ and a bank. The Town Hall, with its pillars, stands in the centre of the image. Dating back to 1823-24, Macclesfield Town Hall was designed in the Greek Revival style by Francis Goodwin. It was extended in 1869-71 by James Stevens and again in 1990-91, and is a Grade II* listed building.
Street Scene
From the Market Place looking down Mill Street, a photo taken between 1910 and 1919 shows pedestrians and shoppers, with the Angel Inn visible centre right.
Seventies Scene
Chestergate as seen in the 1970s features National Westminster Bank, built in 1973, on the corner of Market Place and Chestergate.
Local Traders
Market stalls outside Macclesfield Town Hall, viewed from Mill Street in the 1960s, highlight the vibrant local trade.
