Daniel Thomas, a 49-year-old Birmingham man, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping two women in separate, sustained attacks. He was found guilty at Birmingham Crown Court of nine counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault, following a trial where he denied all charges.
Details of the attacks
West Midlands Police reported that Thomas assaulted one woman at a property in Ladywood in 2022. The following year, he committed a similar series of sexual offences against another woman at an address in Edgbaston. Both victims were subjected to prolonged sexual violence.
Investigation and evidence
Thomas initially denied any sexual contact with the victims when questioned by police. However, forensic evidence, including DNA analysis, linked him to one of the women, contradicting his claims. The victims supported the investigation, helping officers build a strong case.
Detectives from the Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) team led the inquiry. Sgt Nicole Brain and PC Erin Kennelly stated: "A repeat rapist is now behind bars thanks to the strength of the very women he thought it was acceptable to violate and assault. The women were able to help us evidence and document his vile crimes and support our investigation and our thanks goes to them."
Sentence and registration
Thomas was jailed for 20 years and will be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life. The police commended the victims' bravery, noting their "strength and perseverance" ensured Thomas was removed from the streets for a considerable time.
