Benefit Claimants Risk £150 Loss if They Miss August 23 Deadline
Claimants Risk £150 Loss if They Miss August 23 Deadline

Households receiving Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit or Employment and Support Allowance have just weeks to update their energy account details or risk missing out on a £150 winter fuel payment. The government has confirmed that anyone whose name does not match the one on their electricity bill by Saturday, August 23 will not automatically qualify for the Warm Home Discount scheme.

The warning comes as part of a Friday press release from Andy Burnham's administration, which stressed that the one-step process is essential to secure the payment. The Warm Home Discount is designed to help around six million households across Britain cope with winter energy costs, but only those who meet the eligibility criteria and have their billing details in order will receive it.

Who Is Affected and What Must You Do?

Claimants on means-tested benefits such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit and Employment and Support Allowance are urged to check that the name on their energy account is identical to the name of the bill payer. This must be done by the August 23 deadline, as energy suppliers will use customers' records as they stand on that date to determine eligibility.

The government explained that the rule ensures the discount is automatically applied to the correct household. Those who fail to align their details may still be able to apply manually, but they risk delays or losing the payment entirely.

Prepayment and Pay-As-You-Go Meters

If you use a prepayment or pay-as-you-go electricity meter, you can still qualify for the Warm Home Discount. Your electricity supplier will tell you how you will receive the discount, which might be via a voucher that can be used to top up your meter. It is important to ensure your supplier has your correct details to avoid any issues.

Supplier records as of the deadline date are the deciding factor. Therefore, even if you update your details after August 23, the supplier may not retroactively apply the discount. The government advises acting promptly to avoid disappointment.

Additional Help: VAT Removal on Electricity

The press release also highlighted that the Labour Party Prime Minister has removed VAT from domestic electricity bills from October 1 as one of his first decisions in office. This move is expected to save households approximately £45 off the yearly Ofgem price cap, providing further relief on top of the Warm Home Discount.

This combination of support aims to ease the financial burden on low-income households during the colder months. However, the £150 Warm Home Discount is separate from the VAT cut, and both require no action for those automatically eligible — apart from ensuring your energy account name matches your details.

What to Do if You Don't Receive Your Discount

If you believe you are eligible for the Warm Home Discount for winter 2025 to 2026 but did not receive it by March 31, 2026, you should contact your electricity supplier first. You will need confirmation of eligibility, which can be in the form of a letter from the Warm Home Discount Scheme, notification from the scheme's helpline, or, for those in Scotland on a low income, confirmation received when applying to your supplier.

Should your supplier be unable to provide the discount despite you having confirmation, you can write to the Warm Home Discount Scheme directly. Your letter must include your full name, address and date of birth, the reference number from your confirmation letter if you have one, the name of your electricity supplier and your account number, and the name of the person on the electricity bill on August 24, 2025 if that differs from your own.

Act Now to Secure Your £150

With the deadline fast approaching, the message from the government is clear: check your energy bill and ensure the name matches. This simple step could mean the difference between receiving a £150 payment and losing it entirely. The Warm Home Discount is a vital lifeline for millions, and timely action is essential.

If you have any questions about your eligibility, contact your electricity supplier or the Warm Home Discount helpline as soon as possible. Don't leave it until after the August 23 cutoff — by then, it may be too late.
