Dunelm has issued an urgent recall for 35 novelty doorstops, warning customers that the products may be contaminated with asbestos. The retailer has urged shoppers to stop using the items immediately and return them to any store for a full refund.
The affected doorstops were sold both online and in stores between January 2019 and February 2026. A notice published on the company's website on Thursday, May 7, stated: 'We have identified a safety and non-compliance issue with the doorstops. The sand sealed within the product may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos. Asbestos is a banned substance because it poses a risk to health even at low levels of exposure.'
The full list of recalled items includes a variety of novelty designs, such as animal-shaped doorstops like Albert Dog, Cockapoo, Cow, Darcy Duck, Fox, Frog, Gilly the Giraffe, Hamish the Highland Cow, Hare, Hedgehog, Lenny the Labrador, Llama, Owl, Pearl the Pig, Pug, Ralph the Schnauzer, Sam the Sausage Dog, Sandy the Boucle Sausage Dog, and Stevie the Schnauzer. Other affected items include Churchgate Swithland Doorstop, Elements Cord Ball Doorstop in Navy and Ochre, Floral Jacquard Doorstop in Black and Natural, Geo Doorstop in Black and Natural, Giraffe Doorstop, Honeycomb Doorstop, House Doorstop, Mushroom Doorstop, Pear Shaped Doorstop, Pom Pom Doorstop in Grey and Natural, Velvet Cylinder Doorstop in Grey and Emerald, and more.
Dunelm has provided detailed instructions for customers who have purchased an affected product. If the product is undamaged, customers are advised to place it in a heavy-duty plastic bag and double-tape it securely. If the product is damaged and the sand inside is accessible, customers should gather the sand using wet cloths to avoid generating dust, while wearing gloves and a mask. The sand, product, gloves, mask, and cloths should then be double-bagged in a heavy-duty plastic bag and double-taped securely. Customers are advised to keep people away from areas where sand has been spilt until the area is cleaned. The sealed bag can be disposed of in general household waste or returned to any Dunelm store for a full refund.
The company added: 'The safety of our customers is very important to us, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.' For more information, customers can call 0333 234 0870.
