Barn Lane in Handsworth, a Birmingham alleyway notorious for anti-social behaviour, sex work and drug-taking, could be transformed into a housing complex for over-55s. Community charity Legacy WM has expressed interest in the derelict land, potentially ending years of trouble for local residents and businesses.
Operation Fearless and the drugs den
When West Midlands Police launched Operation Fearless on May 3, a sniffer dog led officers to an open-air drugs den concealed behind a metal door. The alleyway, situated off the junction of Soho Road and Boulton Road, has long been a bane for those living and working nearby.
Proposed housing development
Legacy WM wishes to transform the site into 23 one-bedroom and half a dozen two-bedroom apartments, complete with car parking and private amenity space. To make these plans a reality, Housing 21 is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) from experienced organisations to act as their "Facilitation Partner" for the proposal. The deadline for applications is midday on August 31, 2026.
Community support and design involvement
If successful, residents would have the chance to be part of a group before taking occupancy of their homes and will be involved in the design process before the submission of the planning application. Councillor Shuranjeet Singh is fully supportive of the plan.
He said: "We have many elderly people in the community who want to continue living locally but require accommodation which is suited to their needs, communal and supportive."
"Developments like this are important because they use land which currently attracts antisocial behaviour and fly tipping, to transform them into places for community."
