Human Remains Found Near A617 in Nottinghamshire

An investigation has been launched after suspected human remains were found in a wooded area adjacent to a busy road in Nottinghamshire. The skeletal remains were discovered by a member of the public near the A617 Rainworth Bypass on Saturday, May 23, at approximately 2:45 PM.

Police have cordoned off the area and confirmed that they believe the remains belong to one individual. Detective Inspector Matt Scott of Nottinghamshire Police stated: "I understand a report of this nature will likely cause concern among the community; however, I would like to offer my reassurance this incident poses no risk to public safety."

"Whilst the investigation is still in its early stages, following inquiries carried out so far, I can confirm that the remains we have found are believed to be of one person. The identity of this person is yet to be established but a dedicated team of officers are working to confirm this as soon as possible."

Specialist forensic officers are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances of how the remains came to be there. DI Scott emphasized: "Any discovery of human remains is taken extremely seriously. A thorough investigation is being carried out and we are keeping an open mind at this time."

He added that the process will take time, with a police guard remaining at the scene for several days. Residents can expect an increased police presence over the Bank Holiday weekend and into the following week. The road remains open while inquiries continue.
