Court documents have revealed that Liam Payne did not leave a will before his tragic death at the age of 31, meaning his substantial fortune will be inherited by his eight-year-old son, Bear Payne.
Intestate Death and Legal Proceedings
The former One Direction star passed away in October 2024 following a tragic accident in Argentina. Nearly seven months later, it emerged that Payne died intestate, without a legally binding will to dictate the distribution of his assets. Under UK intestacy laws, the estate is prioritised for surviving spouses, civil partners, and children.
According to court documents obtained by People magazine, Payne left behind a fortune of £28,595,000, which after expenses and debts was reduced to £24,280,000 (approximately $29 million). The court granted power of administration to Cheryl Tweedy, Bear's mother, and music lawyer Richard Bray, who are named as administrators of the estate.
Bear Payne as Sole Beneficiary
People reported that Bear Payne is the sole beneficiary of his father's estate, inheriting the full $29,007,998. However, the majority of the funds will be held in a trust until Bear turns 18 years old. The administrators have limited authority and cannot distribute the money freely, according to the filing.
Cheryl Tweedy, who shares Bear with Liam Payne, previously released a statement following the singer's death, condemning the media's coverage. She said: "What is troubling my spirit the most is that one day Bear will have access to the abhorrent reports and media exploitation we have seen in the past two days. It is breaking my heart further that I cannot protect him from that in his future."
Impact on Bear Payne's Future
The trust ensures that Bear's inheritance is managed responsibly until he reaches adulthood. While some funds may be used for his immediate needs, the bulk of the fortune will be preserved for his future. This arrangement is standard under UK law when a parent dies without a will and leaves a minor child.
Liam Payne rose to fame as a member of One Direction and later pursued a solo career. His sudden death at a young age has left fans and family mourning, while legal proceedings continue to handle his estate.
