Lichfield has been named among the happiest places to live in England, ranking 13th nationally and second in the Midlands, according to a study based on residents' views.
What makes Lichfield so happy?
The study asked local residents for their opinions on their home towns and cities. Factors taken into account included the state of the high street, crime levels, cleanliness, green spaces and the overall feel of the place.
Lichfield is described as a sought-after commuter town, with a largely peaceful and calm way of life. It is just half an hour from Birmingham by car, and also has good rail links.
Historic centre and countryside appeal
The city's historic centre, famed for its cathedral, is a key attraction. Lichfield is also surrounded by miles of countryside, which is popular with runners, hikers and dog walkers, and offers families opportunities for days out in rural spots.
The area also has a number of top schools, which is another draw for families looking to settle there.
Midlands ranking and house prices
Only Leamington Spa ranked higher in the Midlands. The list tends to favour more affluent areas on the edges of the region, where locals are more content.
The average house price in Lichfield is around £350,000. The ranking places Lichfield among the most desirable locations to set up home anywhere in England.
According to the study, residents in Lichfield generally have few complaints about their home city, enjoying a comfortable standard of living without the same daily stresses faced by many low-income households in more urban towns and cities.
