A 32-year-old mother has been charged with murder following the discovery of her four-year-old son's body at a unit in Wyong, New South Wales, as police investigate whether cannibalism played a role in the death.
Welfare Visit Leads to Grim Discovery
Officers conducted a welfare check at a property on Byron Street after the woman presented herself at the local police station. Upon entering the unit, they found the child's body with reported serious injuries to his arm. Superintendent Chad Gillies described the scene as "extremely confronting."
Cannibalism Investigation Underway
On Sunday, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that cannibalism was being examined as a possible factor. Supt Gillies declined to speculate at a press conference, stating only that the child "had injuries" without elaborating on their nature. He confirmed the woman and child lived together and had a domestic relationship.
Legal Proceedings
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is known to authorities. She was absent from court during a bail hearing. Detectives are working "methodically" to understand the circumstances. "We owe that to that little boy to make sure that we get the exact circumstances and present them to the court in due course," Gillies said. The case is scheduled to return to court on September 1.
