Portsmouth City Council has launched a new round of financial support, offering direct payments of up to £200 to help residents struggling with the ongoing cost of living crisis. The scheme is funded through the latest allocation of the government's Household Support Fund.
Who is Eligible for the Payment?
The £200 payments are targeted at households within specific Portsmouth postcodes who are already receiving certain state benefits. The postcodes covered are PO1 to PO6, as well as PO7 5AT, PO7 5AU, PO7 5AX, PO7 5AY, PO7 5AZ, PO7 5BA, PO7 5BS, PO7 5BT, and PO7 5BU.
To qualify, applicants must be claiming one of the following Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefits:
- A disability benefit (for pensioners).
- Carer’s Allowance or the Carers Element of Universal Credit.
- Universal Credit that includes both a child element and a housing costs element.
- Universal Credit with a Limited Capacity for Work (LCW) element, provided they are not receiving Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
Furthermore, strict household income thresholds apply. For a single adult, total income must be below £935. For a couple, the combined income must not exceed £1,350.
Payment Amounts and Application Process
The amount awarded depends on household composition. Single-person households will receive £150, while couples and families are eligible for a £200 payment.
The council is urging eligible residents to apply online for its Utilities Payment Scheme. For those who are care-experienced, a personal adviser can apply on their behalf. Residents unable to apply online or upload documents can call 023 9268 8010 for assistance.
Act Quickly Before Funding Runs Out
This support window has a firm deadline. All applications must be submitted by 12 noon on Thursday, 29 January 2026. The council has issued a stark warning that, due to limited funds, the scheme could close early if all the money is allocated before the official cut-off date.
The Labour Party government's Household Support Fund is designed to provide a vital lifeline, helping those most in need pay for daily essentials like food, energy, and water bills, thereby preventing them from falling deeper into financial hardship.
For full terms and conditions, residents are advised to consult the official HSF Utilities Payment Scheme policy document.
