Sean Sewell jailed for sex attack on girl, 10, in Birmingham pub

Sean Sewell, 46, was arrested just 20 minutes after he inappropriately touched a 10-year-old girl in a Birmingham city centre pub on April 8 this year. The victim reported the assault promptly, leading to Sewell being identified and detained nearby.

Details of the assault and arrest

Sewell, from Newtown, Birmingham, was arrested shortly after the incident at a city centre venue. Police officers responded quickly to the report of a man touching the child inappropriately. Detective Constable Lewis Harris of West Midlands Police said: "We're pleased to see Sewell has been jailed for his crimes, where he targeted a woman and a young girl."

Linked to bus exposure incident

During the investigation, detectives linked Sewell to a separate incident on a Birmingham city centre bus in October last year. A woman reported that a man had exposed himself to her. Sewell was subsequently charged with exposure in addition to the child sexual assault.

Guilty plea and sentence

Sewell pleaded guilty to both charges: sexual assault of a child under 13 and exposure. On Friday, July 10, at Birmingham Crown Court, he was sentenced to six years and five months in prison. He will also be placed on the sex offender register for life.

Police response and victim support

Detective Constable Harris added: "We have remained in contact with both victims and they have been kept up to date throughout the investigation as we worked to bring Sewell to justice." T/DC Huckerby commented: "Ultimately a quick response from officers on the ground, and a thorough subsequent investigation, has led to Sewell being brought before the courts. We’re working hard across Birmingham and the West Midlands to tackle all forms of violence against women and girls. We take each report incredibly seriously."
