A new community market is set to launch in a Birmingham suburb, with significant support from a leading market organiser who hopes it will become a permanent fixture in the city's calendar. The Erdington Community Market will debut on Saturday, February 28, from 11am to 5pm, located on the pedestrianised area outside Wilton Market on Erdington High Street.
Expert Guidance and Free Opportunities
The market is receiving expert advice and guidance from Kate Gittens, the organiser behind Britain's Favourite Market in 2018, 2023, and 2024. Kate, who previously ran the Shrewsbury Market Hall markets, will assist aspiring traders in setting up their stalls effectively. In a generous move to foster local enterprise, the market's organiser is offering up to ten free spaces for new traders and 'local bright business sparks' for the first three community markets.
Support for Affected Traders
Additionally, a limited number of free stall spaces will be provided to traders impacted by recent market closures elsewhere in Birmingham. This initiative aims to support those affected by the sudden shutdown of Sutton Coldfield's Market Village on January 27 and the closure of the Oasis Indoor Market in Birmingham city centre last March when Priory Square shopping centre shut down.
Boosting Local Economy and Community Spirit
Ed King, Erdington Town Centre Manager, emphasised the market's role in revitalising the area: "Erdington town centre has a rich history of markets and traders, as well as a bustling business community. In 2026, we're bringing this past into the present and launching our regular series of community markets on the High Street." He highlighted that the markets will offer unique shopping treasures unavailable online, alongside free fun and children's entertainment, countering the trend of national chain closures and increased online shopping.
Future Plans and How to Get Involved
Initially, the Erdington Community Market is planned to occur at least every quarter. However, if interest grows, organisers hope to schedule it on the last Saturday of each month. The market also includes a series of free workshops for traders, run by business support provider Good2Great, to enhance their skills and success.
