Birmingham Set for Major Eid ul Fitr 2026 Park Celebration Following Moonsighting Declaration
Birmingham is preparing to host a significant Eid ul Fitr celebration in a city park this year, with dates officially confirmed after a moonsighting announcement. Eid ul Fitr 2026 has been declared for Friday, March 20, in Saudi Arabia, following unsuccessful attempts to sight the new crescent moon on Wednesday. This decision extends Ramadan by one additional day into Thursday, with Eid scheduled for the subsequent day.
Green Lane Masjid Aligns with Saudi Calendar for Outdoor Festivities
Green Lane Masjid and Community Centre (GLMCC), a prominent UK mosque based in Birmingham, synchronizes its calendar with Saudi declarations. For both primary Eid events in the Islamic calendar—Eid ul Fitr and the later Eid ul Adha—GLMCC traditionally organizes large outdoor celebrations featuring prayers, refreshments, and a funfair. Prior to pandemic restrictions, these gatherings had expanded to become the largest Eid events across Europe.
GLMCC has officially announced that its Eid ul Fitr 2026 celebrations will take place at Small Heath Park on Friday, March 20. Worshippers are encouraged to arrive from 8:15 AM for the Eid prayer commencing at 9 AM sharp. The Robert Wilkinson Funfair will be operational in the park from 10 AM to 9 PM on Eid day, providing families with rides and entertainment as part of the festive activities.
Comprehensive Rules Issued for Park Event Attendees
GLMCC has released a detailed list of guidelines to ensure a smooth and respectful celebration for all participants:
- Arrive Early: Prayers will start precisely at 9 AM, and organizers will not delay for latecomers.
- Bring Essential Items: Attendees should bring their own prayer mats, along with a plastic sheet to place underneath, chairs, and water bottles for ablution.
- Transportation: Walk to the park or utilize car-sharing options to minimize congestion around the site.
- Parking Etiquette: Avoid inconsiderate parking. Free and unlimited parking is available at Morrisons in Small Heath. Do not park on double yellow lines or obstruct residents' driveways and footpaths.
- Child Supervision: Children are welcome but must be supervised by parents at all times and should participate in the prayers.
- Litter Management: Use park bins or take rubbish home to maintain cleanliness.
In case of adverse weather conditions, Eid ul Fitr prayers will be relocated indoors to Green Lane Masjid. Multiple sessions will be held hourly at 7 AM, 8 AM, 9 AM, 10 AM, and 11 AM to accommodate the anticipated number of worshippers.
