Thousands Set to Join Colourful Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan Procession Through Birmingham and Sandwell
A massive and vibrant Nagar Kirtan procession is poised to draw thousands of participants to the streets of Birmingham and Sandwell this month, marking the Sikh festival of Vaisakhi with a day-long celebration of faith and community.
The colourful parade, which honours the birthday of Sikhism's founder Guru Nanak, is scheduled for Sunday, April 26, starting at 9:30 AM in Birmingham and concluding at 6:00 PM in Smethwick. This event is anticipated to be one of the largest Vaisakhi celebrations in the United Kingdom, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Sikh community.
Route and Schedule of the Nagar Kirtan Parade
The procession will embark from Gurdwara Babe Ke on Soho Hill in central Birmingham at 9:30 AM. It will then progress through a carefully planned route, visiting seven significant Sikh temples across Handsworth and Smethwick. Key stops include:
- Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha on Soho Road in Handsworth by 10:20 AM
- Shri Guru Ravidass Bhawan on Union Row in Handsworth by 10:40 AM
- Gurdwara Bebe Nanaki Ji on Rookery Road in Handsworth by 11:30 AM
- Gurdwara Baba Deep Singh Ji Shaheed on Oakland Road in Handsworth by midday
- Guru Nanak Gurdwara on Smethwick High Street by 2:00 PM
- Gurdwara Baba Sang Ji on St Paul's Road in Smethwick by 3:00 PM
Throughout the day, attendees can enjoy drumming, music, and singing, creating a festive atmosphere that commemorates the founding of the Khalsa, the Sikh community, in 1699. The procession will also begin with a donation ceremony to charity, reflecting the Sikh principle of 'Vand Ke Chakna', which emphasises sharing and community support.
Vaisakhi in the Park: A Follow-Up Celebration
The festivities extend beyond the Nagar Kirtan with Vaisakhi in the Park, scheduled for Sunday, May 10, 2026, at Victoria Park in Smethwick. This event is touted as the largest Vaisakhi gathering in the UK, offering a full day of family-friendly activities from 9:30 AM to 8:00 PM.
Highlights of Vaisakhi in the Park include six distinct zones:
- Darbar worship in the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and Kirtani Jathas
- A free community Langar kitchen serving vegetarian meals
- A Bazaar featuring Sikh crafts and traditional foods
- Demonstrations of Gatka, the traditional Sikh martial art
- A Food Village with a variety of veggie treats
- Fairground rides for children to enjoy throughout the day
