Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan Illuminates Birmingham and Sandwell with Colour and Devotion
The annual Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan, a cornerstone of Sikh religious and cultural life, once again transformed the streets of Birmingham and Sandwell into a vibrant tapestry of music, colour, and communal harmony in 2025. Thousands of members of the Sangat, including families with parents, children, and grandparents, gathered on May 18 to participate in this sacred procession, which commemorates the formation of the Khalsa by Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

Under bright sunshine, worshippers assembled early in the morning at Babe Ke Gurdwara in Hockley, Birmingham, to begin the Nagar Kirtan. Leading the procession were the Panj Pyare, the five beloved ones symbolising the founding members of the Khalsa, who walked ahead of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The holy scripture was carried on a beautifully adorned float, drawing reverence from all participants.
As the procession advanced along Soho Road, it paused at numerous Gurdwaras, where refreshments and prayers were offered, fostering a spirit of generosity and unity. The event culminated at Gurudwara Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan in Oldbury, where the Sangat reconvened for final prayers and expressions of gratitude, marking a day filled with spiritual significance and joyous celebration.

This year, the Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan is scheduled for Sunday, April 26, 2026. The procession will commence at 9:30 AM from Gurdwara Babe Ke in Hockley, proceeding down Soho Road, and is expected to arrive at Gurdwara Baba Sang Ji by 2:15 PM. Organisers anticipate another large turnout, with the streets once again alive with the sounds of devotional music and the sights of colourful traditional attire.
The event not only honours Sikh heritage but also strengthens community bonds across Birmingham and Sandwell, showcasing the region's rich multicultural fabric.
