Dangerous Driver Avoids Jail After High-Speed Chase
A 22-year-old AI company boss who reached speeds of 70mph in 30mph zones and drove on the wrong side of a Birmingham road during a police chase has been given a suspended prison sentence.
Mani Garcha, from Birmingham, was behind the wheel of a white BMW when officers attempted to pull him over on June 1, 2024. The pursuit occurred near Kings Road and Kingstanding Road in Kingstanding, where Garcha refused to stop and accelerated to dangerous speeds.
Court Details of the Chase
Prosecuting solicitor Shajah Javed told Birmingham Magistrates' Court: 'On June 1, 2024, in the morning, he was driving a white BMW and officers asked him to stop at traffic lights. He refused and continued to drive at 70mph in 30mph [areas]. He drove the wrong way down the carriageway.'
The police pursuit was eventually abandoned due to safety concerns. Officers later found the abandoned vehicle and arrested Garcha.
Defense Pleads for Leniency
Garcha, of Tansley Road, Birmingham, had previously admitted driving a motor vehicle dangerously. His defense solicitor asked magistrates to show leniency, describing him as a 'young man' who had made 'positive changes' in his life.
The court heard that Garcha is the owner of a clothing brand and an AI company, with his solicitor saying he was 'doing really well.'
Sentence and Conditions
Wearing a grey hoody and blue jeans, Garcha was handed a 32-week prison sentence, suspended for two years. Sentencing him, Magistrate Michael Ward said: 'During the two years of suspension, the probation service will require you to do 20 hours of rehabilitation. You will also be required to do 150 hours of unpaid work over the next two years.'
Garcha was disqualified from driving for two years and ordered to pay £587 in court costs.
