A new convoy of travellers has moved onto a field adjacent to the Asda superstore at Barnes Hill, prompting local concern and a push for eviction proceedings. The arrival took place on Tuesday, August 18, and has been reported to Birmingham City Council.
Councillor's response and council process
Councillor Cherie Waddingham confirmed she had informed the city council with a view to initiating eviction proceedings. She visited the site and stated: "I visited the site today following reports of travellers arriving on the field next to ASDA and have ensured the relevant council officers are aware of the situation."
Waddingham added: "The council will now follow the appropriate legal and operational processes to assess the circumstances and determine the next steps. I understand residents' concerns and share their expectation that the matter is dealt with swiftly and appropriately. I will remain in contact with officers and continue to press for a timely resolution."
Residents' concerns and social media reaction
Locals have expressed their frustrations on social media regarding the latest incursion. Some claimed the latest group gained access to the field by breaking a lock. This event follows a similar occurrence in early June, when around 50 caravans, motorhomes, and vehicles took over parkland at Barnes Hill.
The council has previously stated its commitment to protecting its land, saying it "is committed to actively protecting its land and will take steps to recover this land where unauthorised encampments encroach upon it."

Meanwhile, there were reported tensions between locals and travellers parked off Middlemore Road in Kings Norton, approximately three-and-a-half miles away. The council's response to the Barnes Hill site will be watched closely by residents seeking a swift resolution.
