Bromley Residents Embark on Scenic Steam Train Adventure
Residents from Diagrama Foundation's Supported Living Service in the London Borough of Bromley recently enjoyed an unforgettable day out aboard a heritage steam train on the Spa Valley Railway. This special trip celebrated individual passions and the joy of shared community experiences, highlighting the importance of person-centred support.
A Journey Through Time and Scenery
The group, consisting of three residents named David, Michael, and Peter, along with two support workers, Sanjay and Olano, gathered at Tunbridge Wells West Station. They boarded a historic standard-gauge steam train for a picturesque one-hour round trip to Eridge in East Sussex and back. The journey offered stunning views and the authentic sights and sounds of a bygone era, creating a truly immersive experience.
David's Lifelong Passion for Trains
For resident David, the trip held particular significance due to his deep-seated love for trains. Olano, a Diagrama support worker who has known David for many years, shared insights into this passion. "David has always been fascinated by trains and transport," Olano explained. "Whether it's London's iconic hop-on, hop-off buses or steam trains, he loves the feeling of being on the move and chatting about the good old days and the scenery along the way."
This interest began in David's youth during family trips, and though he cannot pinpoint exactly what sparked his love for steam engines, those early memories have endured. Today, he continues this tradition by taking train journeys to destinations like Kent and Bath. While David does not maintain an extensive model train collection, he keeps a favourite model on his windowsill, greeting him each morning as a daily reminder of his passion.
Additionally, David collects keychains from every new place he visits, treating them not merely as souvenirs but as tangible proof of his travels and adventures over the years.
Building Confidence and Wellbeing Through Shared Experiences
Following the steam train ride, the group visited a local pub to relax and share a meal together, capping off a day filled with connection, enjoyment, and new memories. Beth Maina, registered manager at Diagrama Supported Living, emphasised the value of such outings. "Supporting people to pursue their hobbies and passions is incredibly important," she stated. "Experiences like this help build confidence, independence, and wellbeing, while also recognising what truly matters to everyone. It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying the day, especially experiencing something that means so much to David."
Commitment to Person-Centred Support
This outing exemplifies Diagrama Foundation's dedication to person-centred support, empowering individuals to engage in activities they love and lead fulfilling lives within their communities. The Supported Living Service focuses on helping vulnerable people develop the skills and confidence to live independently in their own homes, whether alone or with others, fostering independence and fulfilment.
