Boxing Club Offers Youth Opportunities in Brentwood

As a dedicated boxing fan from a spectator's perspective, I firmly believe that boxing is an excellent sport for young people. It keeps them fit, helps them understand their own strengths and weaknesses, and steers them away from trouble.

Memories of a 2017 Interview

I was recently reminded of an interview I gave to BBC Five Live in 2017. During that interview, I was asked which member of the then Conservative front bench I would take on in a fight. Apparently, I said I would avoid getting in the ring with then Chancellor Philip Hammond due to his very long reach, and also with Boris Johnson, who would have the weight advantage.

Brentwood Central Boxing Club

Here in Brentwood, young people—and possibly future Cabinet ministers—have the opportunity to learn the basics of boxing at Brentwood Central Boxing Club, which is currently based at the Brentwood Centre. I was recently invited to the club to meet its head coach, Florin Nicoric, along with club members, volunteers, parents, and coaches.

There was a palpable sense of community, with everyone working together to create something positive. This is always a good thing for a town like Brentwood.

Future of the Club

We had a conversation about the future of the club, which will need to relocate from its current premises when the Brentwood Centre undergoes refurbishment in the coming months. I am convinced that the club has the right attitude, positivity, and backing to find a suitable solution that will allow it to continue offering excellent training for young people.
