A significant new cultural and educational resource is set to open its doors in Essex, promising to nurture the next generation of creative talent. The Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts (PQA) will officially launch in Witham on Saturday, January 24, marking an exciting development for young people in the area.
A Trio of Creative Disciplines for All Ages
The main academy sessions will run every Saturday morning from 9.15am until 12.30pm at The Maltings Academy on Sprinks Lane. The programme is built around a unique three-class structure, designed to provide comprehensive training across multiple disciplines. Students will receive expert tuition in:
- Musical Theatre
- Film and Television
- Comedy and Drama
This approach ensures participants gain skills both on stage and behind the camera, exploring everything from acting and scriptwriting to screen production. To introduce the community to its offerings, the academy will host a free open day where families can explore the facilities and meet the team.
Sparkling Imaginations with 'Poppets' and Expert Leadership
A particularly special feature of the new academy is the introduction of 'Poppets', a dedicated weekly class tailored for children aged four to six. These sessions are crafted to spark young imaginations and encourage early creativity within a safe, nurturing environment, helping little ones build confidence and essential social skills.
PQA Witham will be led by a passionate and experienced duo. Principal Tarnya West is a trained professional performer with over a decade of teaching experience across Essex, specialising in drama, singing, dance, and LAMDA examinations. She is joined by Vice Principal James Alexander Ridgeon, who brings vital organisational and leadership expertise to the venture.
"I am beyond excited to be launching PQA Witham alongside my partner, James," said Principal Tarnya. "Owning my own school has been a goal of mine, and now it's a reality. Performing arts has the power to transform confidence, creativity, and self-belief, and we are so proud to be bringing these opportunities to young people locally."
Strong Demand and a Focus on Inclusive Growth
The academy has already generated considerable buzz ahead of its January launch, with 31 students already signed up and interest expected to grow further in the New Year. Principal Tarnya, Vice Principal James, and their team of professional teachers are committed to providing a safe, inclusive space where young people can discover their potential while learning cutting-edge performing arts techniques.
They emphasise that the academy's curriculum extends far beyond just singing and dancing, offering all students the chance to delve into comedy, creative writing, and the intricacies of TV and film production. This broad scope ensures every child can find a pathway that resonates with their individual interests and talents.
For families in Witham and the surrounding Essex area, the launch of PQA represents a valuable new opportunity for children and teenagers to develop life skills, boost their self-esteem, and express themselves through the powerful medium of the arts.
