Aldi Announces Significant Pay Rise for Store Colleagues Across the UK

Supermarket giant Aldi has confirmed a substantial new pay structure that will take effect from April 1, benefiting thousands of employees nationwide. This move underscores the retailer's commitment to maintaining its position as the sector's pay leader.

New Hourly Rates and Investment Details

From the beginning of April, Store Assistants at Aldi will see their hourly wages increase to £13.50 per hour across the country. For those working inside the M25, the rate will be even higher at £14.88 per hour. These figures represent a significant boost for the workforce.

Furthermore, based on length of service, these rates can rise to £14.47 nationally and £15.20 within the M25. This pay increase is set to benefit over 28,000 hourly-paid store colleagues, marking the second pay rise for Aldi teams this year alone.

Comprehensive Benefits and Company Commitment

The latest announcement follows January's enhancement of rates and the extension of maternity pay to 26 weeks at full pay. Combined, these initiatives represent a £42 million investment in colleague pay for 2026. Aldi's new rates now exceed those of all other major supermarket competitors.

In addition to the pay rise, Aldi remains the only major supermarket to offer paid breaks to all colleagues. This benefit is estimated to be worth approximately £1,500 per year to the average store colleague, highlighting the company's holistic approach to employee welfare.

Leadership Perspective and Future Growth

Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, emphasized the importance of this investment. He stated, "Our colleagues work incredibly hard to deliver exceptional value for our customers, and we're rewarding that dedication with the highest pay in the sector."

Hurley added, "We’ve invested over £42 million in colleague pay this year because we know that every single member of Team Aldi is fundamental to our success and deserve nothing less." Aldi currently employs more than 45,000 colleagues across the UK and continues to expand rapidly.

Expansion Plans and Additional Investments

The supermarket chain has ambitious growth plans for 2026, including opening 40 new stores as part of a £370 million investment programme. This expansion is complemented by an additional £300 million investment in upgrading and extending existing stores.

These strategic moves reinforce Aldi's position as one of Britain's fastest-growing food retailers, demonstrating a strong commitment to both its workforce and its market presence. The pay rise initiative is a key component of this broader growth strategy.
