Rochdale AFC Community Trust has officially launched a groundbreaking new partnership with the local homelessness charity, Petrus. The collaborative initiative, named 'Rochdale AFC Changing Lives,' is designed to provide crucial support for individuals experiencing homelessness or residing in supported accommodation across the borough.
A Holistic Approach to Community Support
The primary objective of 'Rochdale AFC Changing Lives' is to enhance participants' mental health, physical wellbeing, and social inclusion through a series of free, inclusive football sessions. However, the programme's mission extends far beyond simply offering accessible sporting activities.
It aims to furnish personal development opportunities, creating clear pathways into volunteering roles, further education, and sustainable employment. This comprehensive support structure is intended to assist individuals on their journey towards achieving long-term stability and significantly improved overall wellbeing.
Building on a Successful Foundation
The seeds for this partnership were sown during a collaborative 'Sleep Out' event held at the Crown Oil Paints Arena in August of last year. Participants spent a night outdoors, experiencing firsthand the cold and discomfort that thousands face nightly when homeless.
The event was a resounding success, raising almost £8,000 to be divided between the two organisations. Rochdale AFC Community Trust made the strategic decision to utilise its share of these funds to help establish and support this new, ongoing programme, thereby extending the impactful partnership between the charities.
Voices from the Partnership
Scott Webster, Deputy Director of Rochdale AFC Community Trust, highlighted the significance of this collaborative step forward for the local community. "This is a great opportunity for both charities to continue working together to help combat homelessness within the borough of Rochdale," he stated. "Rochdale AFC Changing Lives will give individuals the chance to improve their health and wellbeing, develop a sense of community and belonging, and gain valuable skills for future progression."
Jane Crompton, Service Manager at Petrus, emphasised the transformative power of sport. "Taking part in sports like football can have a huge impact on mental health and wellbeing, but many people experiencing homelessness face significant barriers to participation," she explained. "Our partnership with Rochdale AFC Community Trust helps remove those barriers, giving people a safe, welcoming place to get active, build meaningful connections and look after their wellbeing out on the pitch."
