Rochdale Youth Centres Set for Major Upgrades with Over £100,000 Investment
Youth centres across Rochdale are poised for a significant transformation, thanks to a substantial financial injection secured by the council. More than £100,000 in funding will be allocated to upgrade three key facilities: The Yard Youth Club in Darnhill, Milnrow Youth Club, and Matthew Moss Youth Centre. This investment aims to revitalise these spaces, ensuring they remain vibrant hubs for the community's young people.
Funding Sources and Allocation Details
The funding comprises £81,070 from the government's Better Youth Spaces Fund, complemented by £20,000 from Rochdale Borough Council's capital budget. This collaborative effort underscores a commitment to enhancing youth services and providing better environments for personal growth and social interaction.
Specific Improvements Planned for Each Centre
At The Yard Youth Club, the investment will fund a complete kitchen refurbishment and the creation of a new open café area. This upgrade is designed to offer an improved communal space where young people can gather, share experiences, and enjoy their time together.
Milnrow Youth Centre will see its bathroom facilities refurbished, addressing essential amenities to maintain hygiene and comfort. Meanwhile, Matthew Moss Youth Centre will benefit from new flooring installations, enhancing the overall aesthetic and functionality of the space.
Additional Investment in Transport for Outdoor Trips
Beyond the centre upgrades, further funding will be used to purchase a brand-new minibus for Rochdale Youth Service. This vehicle will replace the current bus, which is nearing retirement, and will support the service in continuing to organise fantastic outdoor trips. Destinations such as South Wales and Scotland are on the itinerary, providing young people with memorable adventures and learning opportunities outside their local area.
Expected Completion Timeline and Broader Impact
Work on the youth centre improvements is scheduled to be completed by May 2026. These enhancements are part of a broader initiative to ensure that Rochdale's youth facilities are well-utilised and cherished by the community.
Councillor's Statement on the Importance of Youth Centres
Councillor Rachel Massey, cabinet member for children's services and education, expressed her enthusiasm for the project. "Our youth centres are incredibly well liked, and they provide a warm, fun and welcoming environment for our young people to use, share and enjoy with their peers," she said.
"The experiences they create here make lasting memories in their childhoods, whether that be making new friends and being involved in fun weekly activities, or learning new skills and participating in wider groups and opportunities that help them to grow as individuals. I am absolutely delighted we can expand and improve our existing offer for them, as it will help our young people to create even more cherished memories with each other. I really look forward to seeing the impact these improvements will have in their future as we continue to give them the best start in life, and thank you to our grant providers for helping us to make this happen."
Role of Youth Service and Activities Offered
Rochdale's youth service and dedicated youth workers provide a wide range of activities and support for individuals aged 11 to 19. From engaging in games like pool and table tennis to participating in diverse activities such as outdoor education, cooking, team games, and challenges, these clubs play a crucial role in helping young people step out of their comfort zones.
They facilitate opportunities to meet new people, have new experiences, and build positive relationships with youth workers who offer guidance and support on various issues or concerns. This holistic approach ensures that youth centres are not just recreational spaces but also safe environments for personal development.
