Birmingham School Among Best for Attendance Praised by Ofsted

A "trailblazing" Birmingham school has been hailed for its "exceptional" attendance, making it among the best in the region. E-ACT North Birmingham Academy in Erdington has consistently high attendance rates, well above the national average, according to Ofsted. The school's leaders have been asked to share their strategies to help boost attendance at other schools.

Ofsted Praise

In its latest inspection report, the education watchdog noted: "Attendance is very high when compared with the national average for all pupils. Post-16 students attend equally well. The school has sustained these exceptional standards of attendance over time. When the attendance of any pupil slips a little, leaders provide swift and effective support."

Ofsted also highlighted that suspensions are very low and pupils consistently meet the school's high behaviour expectations. Bullying and other prejudicial behaviour are rare, and lessons are not disrupted by poor behaviour.

Exceptional Grade

North Birmingham Academy has become one of the first secondary schools in the West Midlands to receive the new 'exceptional' grade from Ofsted, which has replaced one-word overall ratings with grades in several areas. The school achieved 'exceptional' in attendance and behaviour, along with four 'strong standard' grades and two 'expected standard' grades.

Sharing Success

The school is already sharing its trailblazing strategies to support high attendance with other providers. This recognition is a significant achievement for the school, located in the north of the city near deprived and high-crime areas.

Richard Guttridge, Agenda Editor, reported on this story. The school's success demonstrates that with effective support and high expectations, schools can achieve outstanding attendance and behaviour outcomes.
