Magical literary gifts have been secretly hidden across a Newcastle neighbourhood in a bid to inspire local children to develop a passion for reading. The covert “book fairies” initiative is designed to boost usage of Denton Burn Library and foster a love of books among young residents.
Community Partnership Drives the Project
The project is being delivered by North East charity Healthworks, in partnership with the New Tyne West Development Company (NTWDC) and the National Literacy Trust. The initiative forms part of a wider effort to engage families in the area with free library activities and community events.
Lisa Conroy, from Healthworks, explained: “We are always looking at ways to spark an interest in books and reading amongst members of our local community. NTWDC has been funding our library sessions at which we have provided free activities – including story time, interactive games and arts and crafts – as well as snacks for families. We’ve also linked with the friends of Denton Dene who have organised community litter picks around the sessions.”
Book Fairies Spread Magic Across Denton Burn
The book fairies have been leaving gifts around the area for children to discover, with some items kindly donated by the National Literacy Trust. Conroy added: “The aim is to get local young people to use the library more often and when our 'Book Fairy' contacts heard about this, they wanted to leave some gifts around the area – some of which have kindly been provided by National Literacy Trust – for local children to find.”
She continued: “Our tiny, winged friends have been visiting throughout the spring and are expected to be active in the area again over the summer, so keep your eyes peeled!”
Healthworks Celebrates 30 Years of Impact
Healthworks is celebrating 30 years of supporting local health and wellbeing, providing community interventions across the region. The charity's recent impact report estimates that its local work has saved the health and social care system more than £46 million.
NTWDC is a housing regeneration partnership between Newcastle City Council and Keepmoat, delivering 1,800 homes at The Rise development. The book fairy visits will continue throughout the summer months for local families to enjoy.
