Elgar Festival 2024 Celebrates Composer's Legacy Across West Midlands
Set against the iconic backdrop of 'Elgar Country', the Elgar Festival stands as a highlight of the West Midlands cultural calendar. This year, the event will take place across the scenic destinations of Worcester, Malvern, and Pershore, running from May 23 to 31. The festival honors the enduring legacy of Worcester-born composer Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934) through a diverse and engaging programme.
World-Class Performances and Accessible Experiences
The festival features a rich lineup designed to attract the broadest audience, including world-class artists, accessible performing experiences, talks, exhibitions, and guided walks. The English Symphony Orchestra serves as the Orchestra-in-Residence, performing under conductor and Artistic Director Kenneth Woods. This year's featured composer is 97-year-old icon of British music, Thea Musgrave, whose work is renowned for its colour, emotion, drama, and impact.
Audiences can enjoy Elgar's last major orchestral work, the beloved Cello Concerto in a viola arrangement, alongside his first composition, 'The Black Knight'. The festival also showcases performances by renowned musicians such as Robert Hollingworth and vocal ensemble I Fagiolini, oboist Nicholas Daniel, pianist and composer Huw Watkins, and violist Rosalind Ventris. Special guests include Classic FM presenter Zeb Soanes and world-renowned Elgar record producer Andrew Keener.
Community Engagement and Educational Initiatives
The festival emphasizes community involvement with a 'Come and Play Elgar' day, inviting amateur musicians to perform alongside members of the English Symphony Orchestra in two of Elgar's most challenging overtures as part of a collaborative workshop. The 'Elgar for Everyone' Family Concert, hosted by ESO Youth's patron Zeb Soanes, provides an introduction to the orchestra for music lovers of all ages.
More than 100 young musicians from across Elgar Country will participate in rehearsals and workshops, culminating in a performance alongside their teachers and ESO mentors. A highlight of the programme includes the premiere of the winning entries from the 2026 Young Composers Competition, fostering the next generation of musical talent.
Free Events and Regional Ensembles
All concerts at the Elgar Festival offer free entry for under-18s when accompanied by full-paying adults. Additionally, many other events are free-of-charge, including relaxed concerts, talks, film screenings, and an exhibition. Regional ensembles such as The Elgar Chorale, The Jenny Lind Singers, and the Worcestershire Symphony Orchestra will also take part, showcasing local talent.
