Music lovers can enjoy a free evening of live classical music in a Lancashire park later this month, as Bacup-born opera singer Seán Ruane and St Anne's Community Choir take to the stage for an open-air show.

The concert, set for Saturday, August 29, at Whitaker Park in Rawtenstall, is the brainchild of semi-retired businessman Colin Struthers, who was inspired after inheriting his late father's opera record collection. Struthers previously hosted two private concerts at his hillside farm for small groups of friends, but a chance meeting with conductor Tom Newall helped him connect with professional singers and the local choir, leading to this public performance.
Support and Sponsorship
Rossendale Borough Council and The Whitaker Art Gallery and Museum are supporting the event, and organisers are currently seeking local sponsorship to ensure the concert remains completely free for everyone to attend. They hope to attract 500 people to the park, which would help secure future Arts Council funding for an annual event featuring a full orchestra.

A covered stage will be set up on the grass, with food and drink provided by the museum restaurant. There is no dress code, as the organisers want to ensure the evening is open to everyone. Audience members will hear famous classical pieces featured in popular films and television adverts.
