Shropshire Petal Fields has announced a special evening opening tonight (Wednesday, August 12) for visitors to watch the partial solar eclipse from its flower fields. The eclipse is expected to cover 90-96% of the sun, making it the most visible in the UK since 1999.
Eclipse Timing and Viewing Details
The eclipse is expected to begin at around 6.15pm in Newport, where the fields are located, with maximum coverage just after 7pm. In addition to morning and afternoon sessions, an evening slot from 5pm to 8pm has been made available for booking.
The Royal Astronomical Society has warned against looking directly at the sun without special solar eclipse glasses. Attendees are advised to bring their own, though a limited supply will be available for purchase at the event.

Shropshire Petal Fields opened for the 2026 season on August 7 and has already welcomed over 3,000 visitors in the first three event days. The remaining open dates for 2026 are August 12, 14, 15, and 16. A sunset opening is planned for August 14, with evening sessions from 5.30pm to 9.30pm, and dogs are welcome on August 12, 15, and 16.
Season Success Despite Challenges
Heath noted that despite the challenging growing season, which has left blooms shorter than in previous years, the event has been a success. "We've welcomed thousands of visitors, had thousands of photos taken in the field, and even celebrated an engagement here," she said.
