Outer Banks season 5 features Rudy Pankow's JJ Maybank exclusively through flashback sequences, confirming that the character remains deceased following his death in the season 4 finale. The final season, now streaming on Netflix, does not bring JJ back to life despite fan theories and character speculation.
JJ's Death and the Blue Crown Ritual
In the Outer Banks season 4 finale, JJ was killed by his biological father Chandler Groff and died in Kiara's arms. The Pogues buried his body, establishing a definitive end for the character. Despite this, fans hoped the Blue Crown, a central artifact in the final season, might resurrect him.
Show co-creator Jonas Pate previously teased that viewers might see JJ again, but the season 5 narrative clarifies that this occurs only through memory and flashback. The Blue Crown is described as having the power to "bring back the dead" if used in a specific location at the right time. Kiara, desperate to have JJ back, begins to believe in this legend and attempts the ritual after the Pogues steal the crown.
Kiara's Attempt and the Meteor
In episode 9, Kiara reaches the designated location with the Blue Crown and recites a prayer, speaking "JJ, arise" into the sky. Initially nothing happens, so she tries again. As she gives up, a bright meteor burns through the sky. Interpreting this as a sign from JJ, Kiara experiences a montage of flashbacks from their life together, spanning from childhood to the day JJ died.
JJ does not physically return to life. The flashbacks, along with JJ's comments within them—including the line "When bad things happen, you just gotta let it go"—provide Kiara with closure, allowing her to accept his death and move on.
Actress Madison Bailey, who plays Kiara, explained the moment to TheWrap: "Kiara could have had anything in that moment. I think a lot of people will watch that scene and be like, 'What was that? It was enough for her. It was enough.'" She added: "If you've experienced loss, I was like, 'Oh, I would love to dream about this person, then I closed my eyes and had a dream that night.' That's magic. That counts."
No New Footage of Rudy Pankow
Season 5 opens with a flashback of younger JJ and Kiara, played by two different young actors. There is no new footage of teenage JJ, and Rudy Pankow did not return to film any new scenes. JJ appears in several flashbacks experienced by Kiara and the Pogues throughout the season.
In the show's final moments, the Pogues pay tribute to JJ in a significant way. After a hurricane destroys Kildare Island, Kiara buys the Maybank property with her share of the gold, rebuilds it, and proudly displays the Poguelandia flag. In the largest tribute, Sarah and John B name their baby son JJ, ensuring his memory and legacy live on in the Outer Banks.
