This week’s cover features a nostalgic street scene from the 1950s, showing children playing while a woman scrubs the step in Macclesfield’s Waterside and Bank Street, with Victoria Mills visible in the background. Another photograph depicts a street scene of Macclesfield’s Park Green in the 1950s, complete with shops, cars, street lighting, and bicycles.
Landmarks and Natural Wonders
An incredible sight is captured in a photograph taken in the 1950s showing a large boulder in West Park, Macclesfield, where it had been moved from a field off Oxford Road in 1857. The image highlights a piece of local history that remains a point of interest.
Royal Visit and Park Gatherings
A candid photograph of the Duke of Edinburgh taken in the 1950s in the Peak District shows several photographers snapping Prince Philip on a visit to Mow Cop. Additionally, a black-and-white photograph shows Macclesfield's Victoria Park surrounded by large groups of people smartly dressed for the occasion. Francis Brocklehurst gave 12 acres of land to the people of Macclesfield and created Victoria Park in 1894. The Brocklehurst Family were silk manufacturers.
