Harriet Cowan, the 25-year-old Derbyshire farmer who became a breakout star on Clarkson's Farm, has revealed that the sudden fame she experienced after joining the hit Prime Video series came with an unexpected emotional toll. In a candid reflection, she admitted that the loss of anonymity and the overnight explosion of her social media following left her worrying more about her friends than herself.
Life Changed Overnight
Cowan joined the show during its fourth season, stepping in while Kaleb Cooper was away on tour, and quickly won over viewers with her confident approach alongside Jeremy Clarkson. Her popularity only grew when she returned for season five, cementing her place as a fan favourite. However, the television exposure forced her to leave behind a career she loved—nursing—and adjust to a level of public recognition she had never expected.
Reflecting on her new reality, Cowan said, "I want to just be that girl in Young Farmers that nobody knows and I'm never that, I'm never going to be that again." She explained that she misses the anonymity she once enjoyed as a member of her local Young Farmers community.
Landing the Role
Cowan also shared how she landed the role on Jeremy Clarkson's farm, suggesting producers were keen to showcase another side of modern farming. "I think they did want a female, just to show the other side of it and how we all do it," she said. Although filming required her to spend long periods away from home, she described the experience as worthwhile.
"It went really well," she recalled. "I was two and a half hours away from home... but it was great and I got to work with the whole team and they were lovely. And it got me into the public eye."
Expanding Career
Away from television, Cowan is now expanding her career in a different direction. She recently announced her first book, Life on the Farm, due to be published on 10 September. Describing it as "such a personal project," she said the book explores the realities of agricultural life beyond what audiences see on television.
According to Cowan, readers will gain an insight into "what the farming way of life truly means," the values she lives by, and what a typical day working on a farm actually looks like. She also hopes the book will shine a light on the pressures facing British farmers today.
Challenges for Farmers
"I also wanted to open up about the challenges and realities Britain's farmers are facing today," she wrote, adding that buying local "isn't just a slogan – it's a way of life." Looking back on her family's farming heritage, she said agriculture represents "community, love, resilience, and hard work every single day," and she is excited to finally share her story with readers.
Her growing fan base has fuelled anticipation for another season of the Prime Video series, with viewers already hoping she will return after appearing in both seasons four and five. The show has been a massive success, and Cowan's presence has added a new dynamic that fans have embraced.
