Rochdale's FAB Youth Arts Festival Celebrates Young Creativity This Month

A vibrant new youth arts festival, named FAB, is set to take place in Rochdale later this month, highlighting the creativity of young people across the borough. The event, scheduled for Friday, March 27 and Saturday, March 28, offers a packed programme designed entirely by and for young individuals.

What to Expect at the FAB Festival

FAB, which stands for freedom, art, and belonging, features an exciting array of activities including theatre performances, live music, dance shows, poetry readings, circus acts, exhibitions, e-gaming, mural creations, and a lively carnival parade. The festival aims to showcase the artistic talents of local children and young people, providing them with a platform to express themselves.

Key highlights of the festival include the creation of a large-scale mural on the side of the Regal Moon building in Rochdale town centre, led by renowned mural artist Hayley Garner, also known as Aylo. Additionally, a carnival parade organised by Global Grooves and the Nigeria Community Association will bring colour and energy to the streets. Live performances by M6 Theatre and an outdoor art exhibition at the Square Gallery in front of Rochdale Town Hall are also part of the lineup.

Community Involvement and Support

Over 100 local young people have been involved in designing every aspect of the festival, from its name and colourful logo to the selection of events. Councillor Sue Smith, cabinet member for communities and co-operation at Rochdale Borough Council, praised the initiative, stating that it offers inspiring opportunities for young creatives to participate in free activities.

The festival's main sponsor is Hopwood Hall College, which will host an e-gaming event on Saturday. Other supporters include the government’s Flexible Funds, Greater Manchester Combined Authority, and Arts Council England. Julia Heap OBE, principal and chief executive of Hopwood Hall College, emphasised the festival's role in bringing families together and highlighting the cultural ambition of Rochdale, especially during its year as Greater Manchester Town of Culture.

Additional Cultural Events in Rochdale

Beyond the FAB festival, Rochdale continues to thrive with various cultural offerings. The Saturday Lunchtime Concerts at St Chad’s Parish Church feature performances by vocal quartets, baritones, organists, and piano duets, with admission priced at £6 including refreshments. Meanwhile, the Wonders of Our Universe show at Champness Hall on May 16, 2026, promises an immersive journey through space with astrophysicist Ian Hall.

Organ recitals at Rochdale Town Hall, such as the recent performance by Dr Ronny Krippner, celebrate musical heritage, while art installations like UTOPIA at Aviva Studios in Manchester explore themes of identity and community through a working pub setup. Family-friendly events, including a nature scavenger hunt at Broadfield Park Slopes and music concerts like the Kenion Street Album Launch, further enrich the local arts scene.

All FAB Youth Arts Festival events are free to attend. For more details and updates, visit the official Rochdale Creates website and follow their social media channels.
