An Australian touring company will revive the punk rock era at MADS Theatre next Tuesday, July 7, from 7.45pm. A Punk Opera, presented by Nuworks Theatre, is in aid of East Cheshire Hospice. The production company is teaming up with MADS for the third time in four years. Tickets priced £15 are available from www.madstheatre.org.
Show Reimagines Brecht's Classic
The show reimagines Bertolt Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera, referencing the Thatcher government and the advent of punk rock. It was the era of miners’ strikes, race riots, football hooligans and bin strikes. The Aussie actors pay their own way on overseas tours. Nuworks are a not-for-profit group writing, devising and composing their own music.
MADS Management Welcomes Friends
John Chandler from MADS Theatre said: “We’re delighted to welcome back our Australian friends. They’ve been a big draw on their two previous visits and I’m sure this latest production will be just as popular and entertaining. I met them during a family trip to Melbourne which led to their first visit to Macclesfield in 2023. They must have enjoyed themselves as they’re keen to come back. MADS is a fantastic local theatre and we’re thrilled that proceeds will once again be donated to the Hospice, a charity we’ve supported many times.”
Nuworks Founder on Charity Mission
David Dunn, founder and artistic director of Nuworks, said: “We had a great time in Macclesfield. We establish relations with like-minded people, such as MADS, to have an adventure, meet new friends and fundraise for charity.”
