Titash, a family-run balti house in Sheldon, Birmingham, has been named Restaurant of the Year at the British Curry Championships. The award, announced on Monday (June 29), recognises the establishment as the best in the UK.
Long-Standing Reputation
Operating since 1987, Titash is run by father-and-son team Athik and Jameel Ali. The restaurant has built a loyal following that extends far beyond Birmingham. Jameel Ali told BirminghamLive that customers travel from as far as Cornwall and Plymouth specifically to enjoy their curries. He noted, "We get people from Cornwall and Plymouth who say 'you can't beat a Birmingham curry'."
Signature Dish and Pricing
The restaurant's most recommended dish is the balti, a traditional curry that Jameel describes as "a curry where you can't go wrong." A chicken balti is priced at £9.50, attracting orders from other cities across the country.
Other Birmingham Success Stories
Birmingham's curry scene also saw recognition for other establishments. Pushkar on Broad Street received an Outstanding Achievement award for best fine dining restaurant. Chutney Express Takeaway in Castle Bromwich was a finalist in the UK takeaway of the year category.
Winning Against Tough Competition
Jameel Ali emphasised the significance of the win, stating, "The scene in the UK is so competitive — so to win overall — against incredible restaurants — is a huge moment for us, and for the city." He added, "We're proud to have done it for Birmingham. This award is a testament to nearly 40 years of hard work, passion and dedication from our team, as well as the unwavering support of our loyal customers."
Community Commitment
Looking ahead, Jameel expressed gratitude and a continued commitment to the community: "We'd like to thank everyone who has been part of our journey, we're honoured to represent Birmingham and look forward to continuing to serve our community with the same passion for many years to come."
Titash is located at 2278 Coventry Rd, Sheldon, Birmingham B26 3JR.
