Almost 50 years after Grease became a global sensation, several original cast members reunited for a heartfelt singalong that has thrilled fans. Didi Conn (Frenchy), Dinah Manoff (Marty), Lorenzo Lamas (Tom Chisum), Barry Pearl (Doody), and Jamie Donnelly (Jan) gathered to perform 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' in tribute to their co-star Michael Tucci (Sonny), who was on holiday in Africa and could not attend.
The clip, shared on Instagram, shows the five actors singing together in what appears to be a casual setting. Fans online reacted with joy, with one commenting, 'OMG I love this so much,' and another writing, 'They all look great.' A third joked, 'This is better than the original movie.'
Reunion Highlights Enduring Bond
The reunion underscores the lasting legacy of Grease, which was released in 1978. Didi Conn recently made a special appearance at Grease: The Immersive Movie Musical in London, where she shared behind-the-scenes stories about landing her iconic role. She recalled that her agent told her, 'You gotta go looking like the character.' Knowing only that Frenchy dreamed of being a beautician, Conn spotted 'Frenchy's Beauty Parlor' while driving home. She stopped in, and the owner transformed her hair with 'at least two cans of spray' and shared stories about beauty school that inspired her performance. 'When I went to the audition, I told them the story about Frenchy,' she said.
Conn also reflected on her friendship with the late Olivia Newton-John, who played Sandy. According to Conn, Newton-John was nervous about making the film, especially for an early scene with Frenchy. To help her relax, Conn began improvising: 'I said, "Oh, I'm so happy I have a new neighbor all the way from Australia."' Newton-John initially looked surprised but joined in, and by the time director Randal Kleiser called action, they had settled into character. 'Afterwards she gave me the biggest hug and thanked me,' Conn said. 'And that's how our friendship began.'
Enduring Popularity of Grease
The reunion is the latest reminder of the film's enduring popularity. Last year, several original cast members, including John Travolta, surprised audiences at the Grease Sing-A-Long at the Hollywood Bowl, where fans sang along to the iconic soundtrack. The event drew thousands of attendees.
Beyond the leading stars, supporting cast members have enjoyed successful careers. Dinah Manoff won a Tony Award in 1980 for I Ought to Be in Pictures and appeared in films such as Ordinary People and Child's Play, as well as the sitcom Empty Nest. She later became an author, publishing The Real True Hollywood Story of Jackie Gold in 2021. Didi Conn appeared in productions including The Fonz and the Happy Days Gang, Benson, and Shining Time Station.
