Justin Bieber, then 17, performed a duet of his hit 'Baby' with his 3-year-old half-sister Jazmyn, known as Jazzy, at the MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto in June 2011. The spontaneous moment, captured on video, showed the shy toddler in a white outfit clinging to her brother's hand as he sang the chorus to her, redirecting the lyrics from a teenage love interest to his little sister. "Everybody say hi to my baby sister!" Bieber announced, lifting her for a wave.
A Brother's Affection On Stage
Bieber's interaction with Jazmyn was unplanned, according to reports, and lasted only a few moments, but it became a fan favourite, replayed and shared widely. In an interview with AOL later that year, Bieber said: "When it comes to my little sister and brother, I spoil them. With Jazzy, all she has to do is cry and she gets what she wants." The MMVAs that year served as a triumphant homecoming for the Stratford, Ontario native, who had risen to global fame after his mother Pattie Mallette uploaded videos of him singing locally to YouTube.
From Local Talent to Global Fame
Before his breakthrough, Bieber was known for playing guitar outside the Avon Theatre in Stratford. "I grew up in a really small town with not a lot of money, and I liked singing, but it was just something that was a hobby," he later told Vanity Fair. His YouTube videos caught the attention of talent manager Scooter Braun, leading to a record deal and collaborations with Usher. Within two years, Bieber topped Billboard charts, but he continued to reference his roots, wearing a Maple Leafs jersey on stage and bringing siblings on tour.
Bieber's Extended Family Bonds
Justin Bieber is the only child of Pattie Mallette and Jeremy Bieber, but he has four younger half-siblings from his parents' other relationships. Alongside Jazmyn, born in 2008 to Jeremy and his former partner Erin, he has a half-brother Jaxon, born in 2009, who accompanied him to red carpets and the 2016 Grammys. In 2018, Bieber welcomed another half-sister, Bay, from his father's marriage to Chelsey Bieber, calling her "the sweetest baby sis" in an Instagram tribute. He also considers Allie, born in 2007 and Chelsey's daughter from a previous relationship, a step-sister, including her in family events.
