Margate Band Squangey Bobbins Aims for UK Chart History with DIY Album
Margate band's DIY bid for UK album chart history

Local Band's Historic Chart Ambition

The Kent seaside town of Margate could be about to make music history, as local outfit Squangey Bobbins launches an ambitious attempt to become the first ever band formed in Margate to enter the official UK album chart. In a remarkable display of DIY spirit, the group is undertaking this challenge completely independently, without the support of a record label, management, or any traditional music industry backing.

An Impressive Roster of Collaborators

Despite their independent status, their forthcoming album, Margate Crows, has attracted an astonishing line-up of international music talent. The project features Sean Hutchinson, drummer for the American band Bleachers, whose credentials include work with global superstars Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter, and even performing with Bruce Springsteen. Adding further prestige is Dan Konopka, drummer for the Grammy-winning band OK Go, who brings one Grammy win and four additional nominations to the table.

The British music scene is also strongly represented with contributions from:

  • Billy Lunn of The Subways
  • Peredur Ap Gwynedd from Pendulum
  • Ivan Hussey, who has worked with Liam Gallagher and Jay Z
  • Dan Sealey of Ocean Colour Scene
  • Tommy Gleeson from Feeder

The final sonic polish for the album was provided by mastering giants Nick Brine, known for his work with Oasis and The Stone Roses, and Alex Wharton of the legendary Abbey Road Studios.

A Victory for Margate and Unsigned Artists Everywhere

For Squangey Bobbins vocalist Lewis Colley, their local identity is central to this chart challenge. He is keen to clarify their unique position, stating, “As far as I know we’d be the first ever Margate band to be in the album chart. People have been quick to point out The Libertines or Hawkwind – even though these have associations with Margate, we’d be the first band formed here. I was born and raised in Margate and still reside here now, we are a true Margate band.”

The band has already cultivated a solid local following, having performed at venues including Dreamland and The Albion Rooms, and supported artists such as Toploader and Tom Hingley of Inspiral Carpets. Colley is also reaching out to the local business community, adding, “If any businesses want to support us, however big or small, we would be up for having a conversation with them as well.”

He frames the endeavour as a broader triumph, saying, “I want this to be a victory for Margate, for Thanet, for Kent – and for every unsigned artist. It can be done.”

The album, which is scheduled for release on January 9, features striking artwork by Roger Stanger Photography that captures the “beauty and grit of Kent.” It is available for pre-order exclusively via Rough Trade. A special 12-CD collectable bundle, limited to just 200 copies, is also on offer, with each disc showcasing a different Kent location. The first single, Fake I.D., featuring Billy Lunn, is available to stream and download online now.
