A deeply personal artefact from pop music history is set to go under the hammer, as a heartfelt letter written by Taylor Swift to the late Liam Payne is announced for auction.
The Story Behind the Letter
This unique piece of memorabilia dates back to December 2017, when both artists were scheduled to perform at Capital's Jingle Bell Ball. On the night of Liam's performance, Taylor Swift gifted him a sweet, handwritten note to wish him luck as he forged his solo career path.
The letter, dated "12.1.17", reads: "Liam, Long time no see! I’m so excited for you, you’re crushing it out there. I’m obsessed with ‘Bedroom Floor.’ It’s so cool to see you from afar, I’m always cheering you on. Good luck tonight!"
From Gift to Auction
At the time, Liam spoke about receiving the letter on the Jingle Bell Ball red carpet, confirming its authenticity and even joking about her "very good right handwriting." According to the auction house, the note was later gifted by Liam to a "close associate" shortly after he received it.
Now, Omega Auctions has confirmed the letter will be sold on 2nd December. The lot is estimated to fetch between £5,000 and £10,000 (approximately $6,500-$13,000). The winning bidder will receive not just the original letter, but also its custom 'T' wax seal and the printed envelope from Nashville, Tennessee.
A Poignant Friendship Remembered
The auction announcement arrives just over a year after Liam Payne's tragic passing in October 2024. While their friendship was largely kept out of the public eye, a source revealed that Taylor was "really sad" at the news, having "come up with those boys." Many believe their connection began during Taylor's relationship with former One Direction member Harry Styles between late 2012 and early 2013.
In a recent, sombre reflection on the band's future, Louis Tomlinson addressed the possibility of a One Direction reunion, stating that since Liam's passing, he "can't foresee a time" where he would feel comfortable doing so, adding that he cherishes that the last time they were on stage together, Liam was there.
