Wetherspoons bans loudspeaker calls and music in UK-first

JD Wetherspoon has become the first UK pub chain to ban customers from playing music and taking phone calls on loudspeakers, following complaints from drinkers who said they were being driven to distraction. The company, which operates pubs in Birmingham and across the country, has installed signs in all 792 of its venues instructing customers to use headphones or switch their phones to mute.

Signs installed across all 792 pubs

The move comes after customers complained about hearing other people’s videos and amplified conversations. A spokesperson for Wetherspoon told The Times: “Following complaints from customers, who are being driven nuts by other people’s videos and amplified phone conversations, Wetherspoon has asked customers to switch their phones to silent or to use earphones.”

The ban is the first of its kind among UK pub chains, with Wetherspoon leading the way in tackling what has become a common nuisance in public spaces. The signs are now visible in all of the company’s pubs, including those in Birmingham city centre, such as the one on Broad Street and outlets at Grand Central and New Street Station.

Sir Tim Martin: ‘An oasis of tranquillity’

Sir Tim Martin, founder and chairman of the pub chain, explained the reasoning behind the new policy. He said: “In a world dominated by other people’s music and amplified sound, Wetherspoon pubs are an oasis of tranquillity and contemplation.”

He added: “In order to avoid customers being driven chicken jalfrezi by a cacophony of sound, we are kindly asking phone users to pipe down.” The light-hearted comment underscores the company’s commitment to maintaining a peaceful atmosphere for its customers.

Exclusive BuzzBallz white sangria launch

From Wednesday 26 August, Wetherspoon customers will be able to enjoy a new exclusive drink: BuzzBallz white sangria. This limited-time offering will be available only in Wetherspoon pubs, making them the only place in the UK to try this refreshing new flavour. Inspired by the classic Spanish drink, BuzzBallz white sangria combines juicy fruit notes of grape and peach for a refreshing, ready-to-drink cocktail.

Alongside this exclusive launch, three popular BuzzBallz favourites are available all year round. All drinks, including white sangria, are 13.5% ABV and come in a 200ml ball. The full range includes Berry Cherry Limeade, Lime ’Rita, and Strawberry ’Rita.

Wetherspoon remains a popular choice for drinkers in Birmingham, with pubs across the city, including on Broad Street, as well as at Grand Central and New Street Station. The new ban and exclusive drink launch are set to enhance the experience for customers seeking a quieter and more distinctive pub visit.
