The Dry Spy, a prohibition-style speakeasy in Bromsgrove, has announced it will close its doors on 14th September 2026 after four years of operation, citing rising costs as the 'inevitable' reason. The bar, located at 12 St John St, B61 8QY, is known for its 1920s-themed decor and immersive experience.
A Difficult Decision
In a social media post, the bar stated: 'With heavy hearts, we wish to announce that The Dry Spy will call last orders and close its doors for a “pause for thought” on 14th September 2026. This is not a decision we made lightly but rising costs have made the decision inevitable.' The venue thanked its staff, particularly Emily and her team, for their dedication, and customers for making the venue special, adding: 'We’ve had a blast.'
Impact on the Community
The closure marks another loss for independent bars in the Midlands. The Dry Spy offered a unique speakeasy experience, transporting customers back to the roaring twenties. The bar emphasised the importance of supporting local independent hospitality businesses and high street traders, noting it had survived for over four years in a 'severely challenging financial and regulatory environment.'
Final Months and Bookings
Until its closure, the bar will honour all existing bookings and has contacted customers with reservations for October and beyond to arrange deposit refunds. The venue encouraged patrons to visit and share memories on social media. The announcement included a whimsical farewell from fictional characters George Cassiday, Roger Butts, and Al Capone, highlighting the bar's unique character.
