Inside one of Birmingham's most luxurious stores, the Crown Jeweller is creating exclusive bespoke items for local customers. We met Mark Appleby, the tenth Crown Jeweller since the role was created by Queen Victoria in 1843, at the newly opened Mappin & Webb showroom on New Street.
Mark's prestigious role involves maintaining the UK's world-famous Crown Jewels, housed in the Tower of London, with some pieces still worn by the monarchy on special occasions. Appointed by Queen Elizabeth II in 2012, he balances this duty with his position as Director of Jewellery Services for Mappin & Webb.
The new showroom marks Mappin & Webb's return to Birmingham after 20 years, occupying the same spot as its predecessor beneath the Burlington Hotel but with a much larger space. The store features a dedicated Rolex area, a Rolex Certified Pre-Owned section, and collections from IWC Schaffhausen, Jaeger-LeCoultre, TAG Heuer, Tudor, David Yurman, and Roberto Coin, alongside Mappin & Webb's own fine jewellery.
The luxurious showroom boasts a bar, private consultation areas, and a statement chandelier. Customers can book appointments with Mark to design bespoke jewellery. Mark shared stories about the Crown Jewels, including preparations for King Charles III's Coronation in May 2023, where three crowns needed modification. 'It was our job to enlarge two crowns and completely modify the crown for Queen Camilla,' he explained, noting that it was the first time in 70 years such significant changes were made.
Mark also addressed a common myth: the Crown Jewels are indeed real. 'I assure everyone the answer is 100% yes,' he said, citing the Coronation as proof when 60-70% of the collection was at Westminster Abbey. He emphasized the blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques used in restoration, and highlighted collaborations with Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, which produces 40% of the UK's jewellery.
Through private consultations, Mark helps clients realise their jewellery aspirations, crafting unique pieces in the London workshop. While he cannot replicate the Crown Jewels, tiaras and headpieces are popular requests. 'We are very proud to offer such a high level of craftsmanship to produce truly unique jewellery,' he said.
