Jam donuts are the classic afternoon snack many of us crave with a cup of tea. But one supermarket option, priced at just 27p, stands out as the clear winner. Our taste test compared donuts from Asda, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, and the Co-op to find the best balance of quality and value.
Sainsbury's - £1.30
Sainsbury's donuts, at 26p each in a five-pack, offered a good bread-like dough that was pleasantly chewy. The crust had a solid sugar coating, and the jam was decent, though clear and lacking visible seeds or fruit pieces. They were a solid mid-range option.
Co-op - £1.15
Co-op's donuts, at 28p each, were the most expensive per donut, yet came in a pack of four. The jam was not overly sweet and had a fruity taste, but the filling quantity was disappointing. The dough had good flavor, but overall, they didn't justify the cost.
Asda - £1.27
Asda's donuts, at 25p each in a five-pack, had jam that tasted more like melted sweets than real fruit. They had a strong deep-fried flavor reminiscent of fairground donuts and were smaller than the others. The powdered sugar coating melted quickly, making them less ideal for home consumption.
Waitrose - £1.35
Waitrose donuts, at 27p each in a five-pack, were the clear winner. They had a crunchy granulated sugar coating that covered everything, as a good donut should. The jam was rich, red, and tasted like real fruit, with seeds and flavor. The dough was pillowy and fluffy, not too sweet. These were also the largest donuts, comparable to individually sold ones, making them a hearty snack and excellent value.
